Gate stops are timber pieces fitted on the outside for the gate to close against. They hide the gap left for opening tolerances and prevent the gate swinging through the opening thus protecting the latch and the hinge. If the gate is outward opening the stops would go on the inside.
Generally the smaller size is used for singles gates and the larger for pairs. With the length according to the height of your gate.
