The Butley has a striking raised helve, this is the "hook" part on the hanging style this is on both wide and pedestrian gates, although for the latter it is slightly lower. The brace that joins the raised helve is called a flying brace.

Sapele, Iroko and seasoned European Oak are extremely durable hardwood timbers with excellent longevity. Seasoned Oak has good stability and character and is more consistent in colour than Iroko which can have variations in colour but has exceptional stability. Both Iroko and Oak timbers will naturally weather down over a period of time to a silver grey colour or can be oiled. Sapele can be oiled, stained or painted.
