The above gate is in Douglas Fir because of the stable nature and lack of knots it is the ideal choice if you are wanting to paint your gates. Equally it can be left untreated or stained as it is a premium softwood and very hard and durable. Larch has many of the same properties as Douglas Fir and is a good, cheaper alternative.
